Our UKRI Centre in AI in Healthcare is hosting a dedicated workshop on Navigating the Regulatory Landscape of AI in healthcare. Industry experts will delve into the intricacies of regulatory frameworks surrounding AI in healthcare. In this all-day workshop, we will explore the regulatory processes that govern the development and approval of medical devices, with a particular focus on AI applications. Attendees will gain insights into the medical regulatory landscape and the adoption challenges faced by AI innovators in the healthcare sector. We will discuss best practices for building AI solutions that meet the highest safety standards, while also addressing common obstacles that innovators encounter.

Speakers
Dr Warren Macdonald is an orthopaedic bioengineer with experience in clinical orthopaedics, research and industry; interested in implant and instrumentation design, fracture fixation devices and strategies and bone responses to system design and performance. Having worked in three hospitals (over 8 years), three academic units (over 18 years), in the implant industry as a bioengineer (for 2 years), and having worked as a Consulting engineer in Orthopaedic Bioengineering for fifteen years, Warren has wide experience in academic practice, the clinical application of engineering and the commercial medical device area.
Ele Harwich work focuses on helping clients within the digital health sector with their regulatory and go to market strategies. She has deep expertise in digital health with particular focus on cutting edge technologies, like artificial intelligence, and regulation. She was previously Head of Collaborations at the NHS AI Lab and led on two key reports on the evaluation of AI-enabled medical devices, and ways to develop and deploy AI-enabled medical devices across jurisdictions. She is a member of the British Standards Institution and is currently sitting on the “Validation framework for the use of AI within healthcare” committee (BS30440).
Kanwal Bhatia completed her PhD in Medical Image Computing at Imperial College London in 2007. She has since worked in academia, developing novel algorithmic techniques, as well as in industry and start-ups, translating those techniques to real-world practice. Based on these experiences, she founded Aival (Metalynx) in 2020, a start-up aiming to accelerate adoption of AI by bridging the gap between vendors and healthcare providers. Aival provides software for the robust evaluation and monitoring of AI products at local clinical sites, building trust with clinical users before procurement and ensuring continued performance once in use.
Yasmin has been with the NHS for five years, starting as a Graduate Management Trainee at Guy’s and St Thomas (GSTT) and advancing to a Service Manager position. In this role, she focuses on operational and strategic management of outpatient services, collaborating with clinical teams to enhance patient experiences. Yasmin’s skills include writing NHS business cases, overseeing large-scale administration, and integrating digital technology into clinical settings. Notably, she played key roles in implementing an electronic patient record system and managing an online booking system for Paediatric Allergy Challenges at GSTT.

Gatwick Express, 30 mins to Victoria mainline station, then by Underground, District or Circle lines to South Kensington. Or take a national rail train to Victoria station (journey time 40 minutes) and then by Underground, Circle or District Line; westbound to South Kensington.
From Stansted Airport
Stansted Express, 50 mins to Liverpool Street main line station, and then by Underground, Circle line to South Kensington.
Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports are some distance from London and a taxi is not recommended for the whole journey. However, if you have to travel by taxi, establish the cost before you get in.
On foot
From South Kensington Station, the campus is only a ten minute walk. Either follow the subway signposted to the museums or walk north up Exhibition Road. The College is next to the Science Museum.
By bus
South Kensington Campus is easily accessible by bus. A number of routes pass within easy walking distance of the campus.

By car
Car parking at South Kensington Campus is severely restricted and you are advised NOT to bring a car unless permission has been given. The car park is open to the public from 18.00 to Midnight on weekdays and from 08.00 to Midnight on weekends. Please note that overnight parking is not permitted. Parking in the streets surrounding the College is at pay and display or parking meters for limited periods only.
The postcode to use for satellite navigation to the South Kensington car park is SW7 2BX . Entry is via Exhibition Road.
